Sherwood Anderson led a restless life, dabbling in many careers and marrying four times. Once the manager of a paint factory in his native Ohio, Anderson spontaneously left the factory and his family, going to Chicago to begin his long career as a journalist and fiction writer. His works focus on people's relationships with technology, nature, and each other - an emphasis in which Anderson represents the lack of fulfillment he saw around him. Anderson conveys his vision of the struggling American in such short story collections as Winesburg, Ohio and The Triumph of the Egg.
