After a brief and not particularly successful career as a translator of German texts, Sir Walter Scott moved into different realms - those of narrative poetry and historical prose. He is remembered today chiefly for the latter; his books <i>Ivanhoe</i> and <i>Rob Roy</i> virtually revolutionized the genre.
