Son of a New York farmer, this essayist counted among his ancestors the minister executed as a wizard during the Salem witch trials. Dubbed "a sort of reduced Emerson" by Henry James, John Burroughs is today considered a pioneer of the modern nature essay. His works include Ways of Nature (1905), Birds and Poets (1877), and Notes on Walt Whitman (1867), among others.
