Given that his father wrote a dictionary, it seems ironic that Richard Brinsley Sheridan is remembered today as the creator of that great abuser of the English tongue, The Rivals' Mrs. Malaprop. Sheridan authored several comedies of manners, all of which pale next to the comedy of his own life; the convoluted tale of his elopement with the beautiful Elizabeth Linley verges on farce. (Among other things, he followed her to a nunnery, fought two duels, and dropped out of law school in order to marry her.)
