The Works of Edgar Allan Poe. Edited by John H. Ingram. Volume 3: Poems and Essays

After publishing his first volume of poetry, Poe was sent by his adoptive father to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point - where he deliberately and successfully courted expulsion by refusing to attend classes. Poe later became famous for his somber poems and macabre works of short fiction, which included the first modern detective story (The Murders in the Rue Morgue).
