Before he published his best-known works - a treatise on archery, Toxophilus, and the educational treatise The Schoolmaster - Ascham served as tutor to Elizabeth I, later becoming Greek Preceptor in her court. Ascham's connection to the royal family was long established; he dedicated Toxophilus to Henry VIII, and tutored Prince Edward before serving Elizabeth. In her regime he became royal secretary, and remained close to diplomatic affairs until his death at age 53.
