The State in Its Relations with the Church. In Two Volumes. Volume 1

This great British statesman supposedly came close to entering the clergy before choosing politics instead. Affiliated with the Whig Party, he became prime minister four times; he is remembered for advocacy of Home Rule in Ireland and for calling attention to Turkish persecution of Bulgarians. His writings, both literary and political, include Studies on Homer and the Homeric Age and The State in Its Relations with the Church. He also left fourteen volumes of diaries, deeply revealing personally as well as politically.
