The Puritans

Maine native Arlo Bates first worked as a newspaper editor and then later as an English professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Author of both poetry and prose, Bates' work includes The Philistines (1889) which centers around a painter whose marriage into repressive Boston society ruins his art, Prince Vance (1888) which he wrote with his wife, and Sonnets in Shadow (1887) which he wrote about his wife.
