Having attained the rank of major general by his superb show of military prowess in the Mexican and Civil Wars, Wallace was to become the famous writer of Ben-Hur (1880), which sold as many as 2,000,000 copies. Though an attorney by education, he was inspired by the success of his first novel, The Fair God (1873), to continue writing all throughout his life, producing (among others) The Boyhood of Christ (1888), The Prince of India (1893), and Lew Wallace: An Autobiography (1906).
