Trained as a philologist and a jurist, Sir William Jones supported himself with legal practice as he pursued distinction in oriental studies. Uniting his interests in law and the Orient, Jones attained a Calcutta judgeship in 1783; he soon founded the Bengal Asiatic Society, distinguishing himself as a Sanskritist and scholar of Indian law and culture. Jones's publications include philological essays, collections of original and translated poetry, and extensive studies of oriental law.
