The Poetical Works of Nicholas Rowe

  • Author: Nicholas Rowe
  • This English dramatist and poet was trained as a barrister, a career he soon left for literature. The genre for which Rowe remains most famous is what he called the "She-Tragedy," depicting pitiable but enduring women in tragic situations. Rowe also edited Shakespeare's plays, contributing, among other things, a number of divisions of acts and scenes. His best-known tragedies include Tamerlane and The Fair Penitent.
