Known primarily for his nature poetry in blank verse, this English poet published such works as "Cyder," a celebration of cider, written in the manner of Virgil's Georgics, and "The Splendid Shilling," bemoaning the exceptional poverty endured by poets. Citing Philips's influence in poems about agriculture, James Thomson hails him as "Pomona's bard" in his Autumn section of "The Seasons."
