James Thomson's life was laden with tragedy. His father, an alcoholic, was paralyzed when Thomson was six, and his mother died two years later. Little over a decade later, the woman he loved died before they could be married. The melancholy of these events bears heavily on Thomson's poetry, which includes such acclaimed works as The Doom of a City and The City of Dreadful Night. Despite his sadness and eventually-fatal alcoholism, Thomson wrote some humorous works, including the poem Sunday up the River.
