The Poetical Works of Ambrose Philips. With the life of the author

  • Author: Ambrose Philips
  • This poet was nicknamed "Namby-Pamby" for his children's verse, which was, nonetheless, celebrated by such critics as Samuel Johnson. A member of Joseph Addison's literary circle, Philips is most famous for his "pastoral war" against Alexander Pope, in which the latter published an extended mockery of Philips's bucolic poetry. Philips also published a rendition of Racine's Andromaque, entitled The Distrest Mother.
