The Poems of Henry Howard, Earl of Surrey. Edited with a Memoir by James Yeowell

  • Author: Henry Howard
  • When Henry Howard, the Earl of Surrey, was a youth, he was impetuous and rowdy, a derelict noble youth who wandered the streets in the middle of the night, breaking windows. A friend of Sir Thomas Wyatt's son, Howard became the elder Wyatt's protégé, and not only continued to develop the English sonnet, but also became the first writer to publish in blank verse in his translation of the Aeneid. He published little verse during his short lifetime, for before he could attain a high degree of fame he fell out of favor with the royal family, was convicted on a trumped-up treason charge, and beheaded.
