The Master of the Inn

Author of the old saw "gather ye rosebuds while ye may," Robert Herrick's work drew from a Classical tradition instilled in him by his mentor Ben Jonson, but with a light and playful touch. A cleric who secretly put some faith in a natural, almost Pagan spirituality that he kept hidden from the dominant Puritan world, Herrick wrote verses which reflect this love of nature and sensuality.
