The Massacre of St. Bartholomew. Preceded by a History of the Religious Wars in the Reign of Charles IX

  • Author: Henry White
  • This poet remains an archetype of promising youth passing before its time. The son of a butcher, White was studying law and publishing work in literary magazines at fifteen. With Robert Southey's encouragement, he enrolled at Cambridge, and was hailed universally as a scholar and poet of extraordinary promise. However, White had to scramble to compensate for his poor primary education; overworked to the extreme, he fell down dead at twenty-one. White's works were published in three volumes by Southey; the former's hymn "Oft in danger, oft in woe" remains one of few of his works that is still widely read.
