A devout Catholic convert and an admirer of Victorian times, Gilbert Keith Chesterton was a prolific writer, publishing novels, poetry, and essays on literature and society. His more famous works include the Father Brown detective novels, such humorous essays as "On Running after One's Hat," and the historical studies The Victorian Age in Literature and The Everlasting Man.
