James Boswell was a lawyer for twenty years before earning fame as the biographer and travel companion of Dr. Samuel Johnson, the great British lexicographer and man of letters. The biography began with Boswell's composition of The Journal of a Tour to the Hebrides with Samuel Johnson, LL.D., eventually becoming a massive account of Johnson's wit and intellectual fecundity. Among Boswell's other works are An Account of Corsica, in which he defends the island's struggle for nationhood, and extensive personal papers and diaries.
