Supreme Court Chief Justice John Marshall's greatest adversary, Thomas Jefferson, was also his distant kinsman. Marshall, a veteran of Valley Forge, was to become an ardent Federalist who believed in the necessity of a strong Supreme Court; Jefferson, a Republican, abhorred Marshall's belief that the Supreme Court could rule on the constitutionality of state laws. As a chief justice, Marshall successfully girded the Supreme Court with the tools it would need to become a major power in American government. His writings are collected in The Writings of John Marshall Upon the Federal Constitution, (1839), among other volumes.
