The Life and Adventures of James P. Beckwourth, Mountaineer, Scout, and Pioneer, and Chief of the Crow Nation of Indians

This "mountain man" roamed California, Missouri, and the Rocky Mountains, and became a legend among frontiersmen. Beckwourth spent much time among the Indians, whom he describes in his detailed Life and Adventures of James P. Beckwourth, Mountaineer, Scout, and Pioneer and Chief of the Crow Nation of Indians (1856), dictated to writer T.D. Bonner. Scholars consider Beckwourth's book a key source of information on Crow, Cheyenne, and Comanche tribes before 1830.
