Once the Professor of Public Law at Edinburgh University, James Lorimer is remembered today as the father of European federalism; i.e., he was among the first to propose the political unification of Europe. Also a literary critic, he wrote of Emily Brontë's Wuthering Heights that "the only consolation which we have on reflecting on it is that it will never be generally read."
