This historian and barrister converted to Christianity and changed his name from "Cohen" at the time of his wedding; he was knighted in the same year. A precocious child, Palgrave supposedly translated The Battle of the Frogs and Mice from Latin into French when he was just eight years old. Distinguished as a medievalist, Palgrave is best remembered for his History of Normandy and England. His son, also named Francis, was famous for his anthology of English poetry.
