A colonel and later brigadier general in the Civil War, Harrison was the last Civil War general to become president of the United States. After the war, Harrison lent his support to the Republican party, and was eventually elected to the Senate, where he led a career as one of the Republican faithful. Faith paid off when in 1888 Harrison became the Republican candidate for president, winning the election by electoral - but not popular - vote. His administration tried to balance the nation's industrial and agrarian concerns, while working to expand American influence abroad.
