Abandoning a career in law after a single eviction case, this Massachusetts native turned to journalism, and eventually ended up writing one of the biggest bestsellers of the nineteenth century. His popular Utopian romance Looking Backward: 2000-1887 (1888) envisioned a world of economic equality and thereby set off a flurry of excitement in socialist circles around the globe. Bellamy continued to push his social theories after the book's success, writing and lecturing until his sudden death from tuberculosis in 1898.
