Silas Marner

Two years before she first published fiction as "George Eliot," Mary Ann Evans produced a translation of Ludwig Feuerbach's Das Wesen des Christenthums. Such scholarship in German philosophy represents well the wide range of Evans's intellectual powers, which only later gained popular acclaim for such pseudonymously-published novels as Adam Bede, The Mill on the Floss, Silas Marner, and Middlemarch. In addition to her many novels, Evans published poetry, essays, and a verse drama.
