A hard-living farmer who fathered several illegitimate children and became an outspoken rebel against the prevailing social order, Robert Burns is now beloved as the national poet of Scotland. His volumes of lyric poetry were well-received by both the public and the major critics of his day, but he is remembered mainly for his song lyrics, which include "A Red, Red Rose" and "Auld Lang Syne."
