Believing himself a servant of divine will, Oliver Cromwell successfully led the New Model Army against the Royalists in the English Civil War. Once Charles I was executed, Cromwell assumed the title of Lord Protector of the Realm, essentially ruling England as a dictator. Cromwell remains notorious for his oppression of the Irish following his assumption of power in Britain, but is also remembered for his advocacy of representative government, albeit aristocratic.
