Theodor Mommsen was the first person - not merely the first modern scholar, for to the best of our knowledge, the Romans never did so themselves - to codify Roman constitutional law. Reknowned as a philologist and historian, Mommsen was an expert on inscriptions of ancient Rome; he also wrote on Roman criminal law and produced the highly-acclaimed Römische Geshichte, or History of Rome, which, although unfinished, remains highly regarded for the author's detailed scholarship. Mommsen became the first German recipient of the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1902.
