Grandson of the Jewish philosopher Moses Mendelssohn, Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy was already a recognized composer at the age of twelve. Famous for such works as Elijah, Lieder ohne Worte (Songs Without Words), and the incidental score to A Midsummer Night's Dream, Mendelssohn was also known during his lifetime as the man who spearheaded the Bach revival of the 1840s.
