A renowned poet and composer, Guillaume de Machaut spent much of his working life in the service of King John of Bohemia. Taking his cue partially from popular trouvère songs, Machaut infused his ars nova-style music with a degree of rusticity; however, he was also capable of writing in the "high style," and his Mass - the first complete mass setting by a single composer - contains several isorhythmic motets.
