With his Autobiography, Benvenuto Cellini provided posterity with an important account of the political, cultural, and artistic world of the Florentine Renaissance. A celebrated sculptor and goldsmith, relatively little of Cellini's work survives today; there are only a few coins and medals, his famous golden salt-cellar, the Nymph of Fountainebleau, a bronze bust of Cosimo de Medici, his Perseus, and a few other works in gold, bronze and marble. However, his writings have made him an important figure within Renaissance studies for his candid and detailed depictions of a turbulent time and a difficult profession.
