The Scottish-born son of a weaver, Carnegie weathered financial depressions and avoided speculation to emerge with a fortune of nearly $500 million. A dedicated philanthropist, Carnegie donated the larger part of his fortune "for the improvement of mankind," and spent much of his later years in traveling, reading, and writing. His works include The Autobiography of Andrew Carnegie (1920), Round the World (1881), and Gospel of Wealth (1889).
