Daughter of a Hungarian aristocrat and orchestra conductor, Baroness Emmuska Orczy originally studied to be a painter and had some notable successes in that field. She became internationally famous in 1905 when her first novel, The Scarlet Pimpernel, was published; Orczy she later penned a series of Pimpernel sequels in addition to a number of detective stories.
