A self-described devotee of "the Old, the Queer, the Strange, the Exotic, the Monstrous," this American author distinguished himself as a journalist and novelist. His earlier works include such tales as Youma, about a slave rebellion in Louisiana. Later in his career, Hearn moved to Japan and became a Japanese citizen; his works from this period include Glimpses of Unfamiliar Japan and Kokoro.
