Readers worldwide know Tagore for his poetry and essays, but few realize that he was also an accomplished novelist, dramatist, and painter. Tagore won the Nobel Prize in literature in 1913; he was knighted two years later, but renounced his knighthood in 1919 to protest British oppression in northern India.
