Drawing on memories of her childhood in the Swiss Alps, middle-aged housewife Johanna Spyri published the first of the Heidi novels anonymously in 1880. It was an immediate success, and she quickly followed it up with another novel the following year - this time with her name on the title page. A quiet, pious woman, Spyri led a life that offers little fodder for writers of tabloidesque blurbs - hardly surprising, given the wholesomeness of her beloved children's novels.
