Geschichte der Musik seit Beethoven (1800-1900)

Hugo Riemann's fondness for controversial musicological theories got him into trouble at a surprisingly early age: he completed a complex doctoral dissertation at 23 only to have it rejected by the University of Leipzig. Gaining support from like-minded musicologists in who were better positioned to upset apple carts, Riemann was hired for a number of teaching posts; the last of these, ironically, was at Leipzig, where he was named a professor in 1901.
