Julia Kavanagh's stories, novels, and essays concerning female freedom and its compromise within marriage proved so popular that her own estranged father once tried to misrepresent one of his own poor efforts as her story. Kavanagh publicly defended and defined her work, and she gained the respect of such noted contemporaries as Charlotte Brontë, whose work was inspired by and inspired Kavanagh's novels of independent women, Nathalie (1850), Adele (1858), and Beatrice (1865).
