De la démocratie en Amérique. Tome 1

  • Author: Alexis de Tocqueville
  • As the prophet of modern society's future development, Count Alexis Charles-Henri-Maurice Clérel de Tocqueville was the first foreigner to comment upon on the functionality of America's democracy. This Parisian political scientist, politician, and historian not only criticized America's democracy in the famous Democracy in America (1835-1839), but sought to illuminate its successful parts in order to help France learn from the American's mistakes. He foreboded that an extreme emphasis on equality would (among other things) herald the creation of literary works more focused on the average person than the traditional elite; that religion would be compromised into many new sects; and that women would unquestionably become emancipated.
