The author of a series of plays and autobiographical novels, Hans Christian Andersen is known outside his native Denmark almost exclusively for his contributions to children's literature. A deeply unhappy man who never felt completely accepted by even his closest friends, Andersen transformed his own misery into fairy-tale magic in such stories as "The Ugly Duckling" and "The Little Mermaid."
