Abraham Lincoln

16th President of the United States

In law and then in politics, Abraham Lincoln distinguished himself as a thoughtful and diligent man, a social strategist and orator with whom few compare. Before his election as the 16th President of the United States, Lincoln worked in business - earning his reputation as 'honest' for paying off debts despite financial troubles - and law, and also served a term in Congress. His role in guiding the Union through the Civil War, his initiation of the Emancipation Proclamation, and his assassination while in office have all contributed to his heroic status in American culture. He is also admired for his excellent orations, most significant among which are the Gettysburg Address and his two inaugural speeches.

"As an individual who undertakes to live by borrowing, soon finds his original means devoured by interest, and next no one left to borrow from-so must it be with a government."

"Character is like a tree and reputation like its shadow. The shadow is what we think of it; the tree is the real thing."

"Don't interfere with anything in the Constitution. That must be maintained, for it is the only safeguard of our liberties."

"If you would win a man to your cause, first convince him that you are his sincere friend."

"The best thing about the future is that it comes one day at a time."

"The shepherd drives the wolf from the sheep's throat, for which the sheep thanks the shepherd as his liberator, while the wolf denounces him for the same act as the destroyer of liberty."

"What kills a skunk is the publicity it gives itself."

"Whatever you are, be a good one."
