Abraham Lincoln 16th President of the United States In law and then in politics, Abraham Lincoln distinguished himself as a thoughtful and diligent man, a social strategist and orator with whom few compare. Before his election as the 16th President of the United States, Lincoln worked in business - earning his reputation as 'honest' for paying off debts despite financial troubles - and law, and also served a term in Congress. His role in guiding the Union through the Civil War, his initiation of the Emancipation Proclamation, and his assassination while in office have all contributed to his heroic status in American culture. He is also admired for his excellent orations, most significant among which are the Gettysburg Address and his two inaugural speeches.
