At the Paris premiere of Gounod's opera Jeanne d'Arc, Georgina and Mme. Gounod were seated uncomfortably near one another; not coincidentally, the audience's favorite song from the opera was "Rentrez, Anglais!" - "Englishmen, go home!" Modern audiences know Gounod mainly for his opera Faust, as well as for his adaptation of a Bach prelude in the Ave Maria. |
