|Charles Gounod (1818-1893), list of works|
|Unable to curb his taste for extramarital studies, composer Charles Gounod met his match in the English divorcée and amateur singer Georgina Weldon (incidentally the only person known to have blackmailed Queen Victoria - albeit unsuccessfully). At the Paris premiere of Gounod's opera Jeanne d'Arc, Georgina and Mme. Gounod were seated uncomfortably near one another; not coincidentally, the audience's favorite song from the opera was "Rentrez, Anglais!" - "Englishmen, go home!" Modern audiences know Gounod mainly for his opera Faust, as well as for his adaptation of a Bach prelude in the Ave Maria.|
