Henrik Ibsen (1828-1906)
Spending much of his life in voluntary exile from his native Norway, Henrik Ibsen seized hold of European theater traditions and did his best to reinvent them. Ignoring the current vogue for drawing-room comedy, he drew on memories of his own unhappy childhood to present his audiences with a cold and harsh mirror of their own lives in such plays as A Doll's House, Ghosts, and Hedda Gabler.
