Belaieff, Leipzig. | | |  | In the published score of his Scheherezade, an orchestral suite based on a number of episodes in the Arabian Nights, Rimsky-Korsakov described the work as follows: "The Sultan Schahriar, convinced that all women were unfaithful, had sworn to execute each of his wifes after only one night of marriage. However, the Sultana Scheherezade saved herself by diverting the Sultan with stories that unfolded slowly over 1001 nights. Schahriar, rendered helpless by his curiosity, kept putting off Scheherezade's execution-eventually renouncing his vow altogether." | Nikolai Andreievich Rimsky-Korsakov (1844-1908), list of works | | | It was only after becoming a professor of music at the St. Petersburg Conservatory that Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov realized it would behoove him to learn some music theory. Once his studies were finished, he pushed his newfound learning on the rest of the "Mighty Five" - even posthumously "editing" his friends' works to bring them into accord with "the rules." Rimsky-Korsakov is best-remembered for his own works, which include Scheherezade and Capriccio español. |
