Ferdinando Carulli (1770 - 1841)
Originally a student of the cello, young Ferdinando Carulli encountered a new instrument called the guitar and began teaching himself to play it. He quickly mastered the relevant techniques and began writing guitar music suited to his personal strengths. Later, Carulli moved to Paris and captivated French audiences; they had never before encountered a performer who applied such musicianship to the guitar. Carulli's compositions are virtually forgotten today, but his pedagogical writings on the guitar remain indispensable to amateur and professional alike.
