Sir Richard Francis Burton (1821-1890), list of works This anthropologist and man of letters dropped out of Oxford to join the Indian army and travel the world. Later, serving as a consul for the British government, Burton traveled to Africa, South America, and the Middle East. He penned over thirty accounts of his travels, including First Footsteps in Eastern Africa , in which he describes discovering Lake Tanganyika. In addition to his travel narratives, Burton published translations of the Arabian Nights and the Kama Sutra , and was said to be fluent in over twenty languages.
