This anthropologist and man of letters dropped out of Oxford to join the Indian army and travel the world. Later, serving as a consul for the British government, Burton traveled to Africa, South America, and the Middle East. In addition to his travel narratives, Burton published translations of the Arabian Nights and the Kama Sutra, and was said to be fluent in over twenty languages.
