|Gaetano Donizetti (1797-1848), list of works|
|After Gaetano Donizetti was drafted into the military, a superior officer heard one of his operas and was so impressed that he instantly discharged the young composer so as not to hinder his musical career. Or so the story goes; it didn't happen, but it makes for good copy. (In fact, Donizetti was never conscripted at all.) Donizetti's remarkable career as an opera composer - which spanned from Milan to Paris and back again - was cut tragically short when, suffering from the effects of tertiary syphilis, he was committed to an asylum in 1846.|
