Or so the story goes; it didn't happen, but it makes for good copy. (In fact, Donizetti was never conscripted at all.) Donizetti's remarkable career as an opera composer - which spanned from Milan to Paris and back again - was cut tragically short when, suffering from the effects of tertiary syphilis, he was committed to an asylum in 1846. |
