Mily Alexeievich Balakirev (1837-1901),  list of works
Never afraid to speak his own mind or to cause offense, Mily Balakirev was one of the most disliked men in the world of Eastern European music - and, paradoxically, one of the most influential. The leader of the so-called "Mighty Five," Balakirev was such an outspoken proponent of new Russian music that he was ousted from his position as conductor of the Russian Musical Society; the scandal led to a severe bout of depression and a startling religious conversion that led many to believe the composer had gone insane. Balakirev's brand of Russian musical nationalism survived him by several decades and is still influential today.
